APM Replacement, Gates 70-129

< Back to Future Projects

As part of our ongoing commitment to enhancing passenger experience and improving operational efficiency, Orlando International Airport (MCO) is embarking on a significant upgrade to its Automated People Mover (APM) system. This project aims to replace the existing infrastructure with state-of-the-art technology, ensuring seamless connectivity and convenience for travelers.

The Greater Orlando Aviation Authority Board approved funding in October 2023 to replace the Automated People Mover (APM) systems to Gates 70-129, Airsides 2 & 4.

The Design/Build/Operate/Maintain contract was awarded to Mitsubishi Heavy Industries America, Inc.
The contract will include replacement of all vehicles, running surfaces, operating systems, power distribution equipment, train controls, communication systems and platform screen doors. Mitsubishi will also maintain passenger service to Airsides 2 and 4 during the work and minimize the time that any one of the two APM lanes to each Airside is out of service during construction.
Project completion is projected for Winter 2028 with a Program Cost of $253 million.

The APM systems serve as vital passenger connections linking the North Terminal to the aircraft gate areas. The APMs are an essential component to MCO’s ability to facilitate the smooth flow of both arriving and departing traffic. Moreover, these systems are of upmost importance in accommodating the airport’s expanding customer base, benefiting all Central Florida stakeholders.

APM FACTS:

  • Airside 2 (Gates 100-129) APM system placed into service in 2000
  • Airside 4 (Gates 70-99) APM System placed into service in 1990 and the cars were replaced with new cars in 2008.
  • Both systems are dual-lane shuttles with an approximate length of 2,000 feet on each guideway lane.
  • Each APM train will have a 240-passenger capacity
  • Each one-way trip takes 1:30 with a :40 dwell time at each APM station.

The modernization of MCO’s people mover system demonstrates the Aviation Authority’s commitment to innovation, sustainability, and passenger satisfaction. This upgrade will not only enhance the overall airport experience but also position Orlando International as a leader in airport infrastructure development.
